Port-Wine Stains

What is a port-wine stain?
This type of birthmark is typically flat reddish to purplish discoloration of the skin that is present at birth and can persist and grow larger throughout life. Early stains are usually flat and pink in appearance. With age, the color may deepen to a dark red or purplish color. They most often occur on the face but can appear anywhere on the body.

What causes a port-wine stain?
The birthmark is caused by dilated capillaries close to skin's surface which produces the distinct reddish coloration. It is classified as a "vascular" birthmark.

How do we effectively remove a port-wine stain?
Since port-wine stains grow and possibly darken and thicken over time and will not resolve on their own, we recommend removal sooner rather than later in life. Laser therapy has been proven to be the most successful and least invasive treatment to remove port-wine stains. Specifically, we use the Vbeam Laser to remove and correct the redness of vascular lesions anywhere on the face or body. This laser works by delivering a burst of light which is specifically absorbed by the blood vessels in the skin. These blood vessels are coagulated and then dissolved by the body using its natural repair and healing process which causes the redness to fade.

What can I expect?
Vbeam laser treatments are not painful, but you will feel a mild sensation similar to a light rubber band snapping against the skin.  Several treatments may be necessary to achieve desired results.
